An architect by training, director Kibwe Tavares has built a global reputation for his textured and vivid short films, combining cutting-edge CG and VFX with live performance to extraordinary effect.
His work has been awarded at multiple festivals including Sundance, where his 2012 film ROBOTS OF BRIXTON won the Special Jury Prize. He has been awarded a prestigious TED fellowship, and has been recognized as one of Fast Company’s ‘100 Most Creative People in Business’.
Kibwe’s latest project, Robot & Scarecrow, is a striking fairy tale starring Jack O’Connell (STARRED UP, ’71) and Holliday Grainger (CINDERELLA, THE RIOT CLUB) and shot at one of the UK’s most iconic music festivals – the Secret Garden Party.
Robot&Scarecrow was produced by Daniel Emmerson of DMC Film - the London-based production company run by acclaimed actor and producer Michael Fassbender and his partner Conor McCaughan. The film was financed by new social network, Vero and arts funding body, The Space.
DMC is behind major studio films like ASSASSIN’S CREED and independent award-winners like SLOW WEST. The company prioritises supporting the next generation of storytellers and Robot & Scarecrow is just one of a series of ambitious short film projects the company is producing with some of the most exciting emerging directors in the UK and Europe.
The company has chosen Vero as the primary social platform for these films because it offers new opportunities for directors and creatives to connect meaningfully with their fans and peers and to not just share their work but build a sustainable community around it.
Robot & Scarecrow will be released on Wednesday May 31.
