In 1977 the photographer Robert Whitman got a call asking him to shoot some promotional shots for an unsigned 19 year old musician called Prince Rogers Nelson.
Whitman didn’t know much about the man the world would come to know simply as Prince, but having listened to an early demo of “Soft and Wet” on his car stereo, knew this kid was going to be a star.
The shoot saw Whitman photograph the young artist on the street and in the studio and captures that rarest of events - Prince smiling. To mark the 40th anniversary of this iconic shoot, Robert Whitman has produced a limited edition book, Prince Pre Fame, that offers a wry and honest commentary of Prince’s early style, wiring and creative process.
Available in both a Strictly Limited Edition (100 signed and numbered books with a limited edition signed and numbered silver gelatin print) and Limited Edition version (1,100 signed and numbered books), « Prince Pre Fame » contains a total of 648 images as well, new writing, the original 1977 press brochure and a deeply personal and moving tribute from filmmaker Spike Lee whose passion for prince is laid bare.
Robert Whitman, The Marse Group & NJG Studio will donate 5% of the purchase price to amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) - this will be matched by Vero, totaling 10%.
